Step back in time and discover the rich heritage of Lowndes County at the Columbus-Lowndes Public Library’s Local History Department - a treasure trove of stories, documents, and memories that bring our community’s past to life.

Since its founding in 1962, the Local History Department has grown into a vibrant hub for history lovers, genealogists, and curious minds alike. It’s home to two remarkable spaces:

The Buckley Genealogy Room — Thanks to a generous gift from Dr. George Buckley in memory of his wife, Margaret Latimer Buckley, this room is packed with over 5,000 books, countless periodicals, and nearly 1,000 reels of microfilmed newspapers and government records. It’s the perfect place to dive deep into Mississippi’s history and trace your family roots.

The Billups-Garth Archival Room — Supported by the Billups-Garth Foundation since 1992, this expansive archive holds more than 1,000 cubic feet of original documents, including court records, city minutes, school files, maps, photographs, scrapbooks, and so much more. These priceless resources capture the vibrant history of Columbus, Lowndes County, and beyond.

Whether you’re researching local churches, historic homes, cemeteries, businesses, or community organizations, you’ll find a wealth of fascinating information waiting to be uncovered.
