JOB DESCRIPTION

Spring 2022

 

 

Title: Circulation Desk Assistant

Classification: Hourly, Non-Exempt (Full Time – 37.5 hours)

Reports To: Circulation Coordinator

 

SUMMARY

Under direction of the Circulation Coordinator, provides support in a library environment by assisting library users and other library staff. Organizes, maintains, and circulates all types of library materials. Performs distribution and receiving of library materials.  

 

GENERAL SKILLS

  • Greet the public, assisting as needed using library resources and providing services.

  • Instruct library users on how to use the library’s computes and other resources.

  • Retrieves materials from collection bins and book drops.

  • Check materials in and out using the SirsiDynix Workflows Integrated Library System.

  • Assist in shelving in-coming materials and in preparing outgoing materials.

  • Create and manage patron accounts.

  • Collect and record fees or fines; process and mail statements for overdue accounts.

  • Processes and receives Inter-Library Loan requests.

  • Emails/Calls library users when requested materials are available.

  • Ensures that daily hold and requests lists are pulled and maintained.

  • Ensures that adequate supplies of library materials are available.

  • Collect statistical data and prepare reports as required; including the daily door count and wi-fi visual checks.

  • Ensure a welcoming physical appearance for the library, taking into consideration the safety needs of clients.

  • Perform maintenance of housekeeping duties as assigned.

  • Demonstrate a clear understanding of library policies and operations interpreting the policies as required to other staff or library users.

  • Assist other staff as required.

  • In the absence of the Circulation coordinator, may serve as person in charge.

  • Other duties as assigned.

Maintains confidentiality with appropriate information. Abides by standards, professional guidelines, and departmental policies. Follows appropriate lines of communication.

Resource Management – Demonstrates ability to plan, prioritize and organize tasks ensuring deadlines are met.

 

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

 

The qualified applicant must possess the following physical skills:

  • Evening and weekend work.

  • Ability to sit for extended periods.

  • Ability to frequently stand and walk.

  • Ability to stoop, bend and stretch.           

  • Ability to climb step stool or ladder.

  • Ability to perform housekeeping skills.

  • Ability to lift and move objects weighing up to 30 lbs.

  • Normal manual dexterity and hand-eye coordination.

  • Ability to use audio/visual equipment and electronic office equipment including, but not limited to computers, telephones, calculators, copiers, printers and FAX machines.

  • Ability to work under conditions involving exposure to dust.

  • Infrequent travel for continuing education, professional development and training.

  • Ability to drive with valid driver’s license; possesses personal transportation.

 

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

 

  • High school diploma or GED.

  • One year of public service experience.

  • Must be able to operate computer equipment with minimal training.

  • Must be able to accurately file in alphabetical and numerical order.

  • Must be able to accurately handle monetary transactions.

 

COMPENSATION & BENEFITS

This position will pay $11.00 per hour (bi-monthly pay). Benefits include State of Mississippi Blue Cross & Blue Shield Health Insurance, Life Insurance, participation in the Public Employees Retirement System (PERS), Personal Leave, Medical Leave, and paid Holidays.
